Copy the layer => darken it => remove the centre with a soft brush

or

you can use a round gradient, too.

Gimp is really a great software...
I'm doing this stuff for about 9 month, so Photoshop is just too expensive (although it's !still! better than Gimp)

by the way, have you installed some plugins?

Ive only been using it since about july and my computeer wouldn't let me install the instruction manual so I've been doing everything I do by eye so layers haven't come to me naturally but Ill try this out (I may shortly be getting photoshop)
